Today, I am going to tell you about the 10 highest ranking universities in Latin America, according to the QS Latin America University Rankings 2019.  Additionally the ranking list was put together based on a similar methodology to the QS World University Rankings®, plus some distinctive indicators and weightings (staff with PhD, international research network,web impact etc). It highlights about 400 universities from the most admired universities in the region.

The first university in the ranking is Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) in Chile. The university currently holds the 132nd place in the world. It is founded in 1888 and celebrates the 132nd anniversary this year. Additionally the UC is one amongst the six Catholic universities in Chile.
Moreover a total of four campuses belong to the UC including a one in the capital city Santiago and also in Villarrica (in the south of the country). The total enrolled student number is 29,655. Additionally the UC places within the global top 50 rankings of the subjects; architecture, art & design, communication & media studies, education & training, law, modern languages, social policy and sociology.

USP holds the first rank in Brazil. And also the  second rank in Latin America in 2019. Correspondingly, the university earned the best score for one indicator from the eight. Universidade de São Paulo was started in 1934 (as the law school of the university started in 1827). Similarly it is the largest public university in Brazil. And it has a student population of 90,000 distributed among 11 campuses.
USP competed at its best in the latest QS World University Rankings by subject. And entered into global top 50 for art & design, dentistry, mining engineering, law, sports-related subjects, modern languages and many more.

Universidade Estadual Campinas (Unicamp) is ranked 3rd in the Latin American Ranking and 204th in world ranking. Additionally, the university got the best score in the citations per paper indicator (a measure of research productivity), revealing its skills on research. Approximately 15% of Brazilian research are from the Unicamp.  The university produces the largest number of patents in Brazil currently. Further, domestic and international students don’t have to pay tuition fees in Universidade Estadual Campinas, similarly to all other public universities in Brazil.

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) has secured 4th place in 2019 Latin America Rankings. And also holds the number one in Mexico’s entries for many years. Similarly UNAM holds the 113th in global rankings. The university is founded in 1910 and now gets a massive student enrollment upto 346,730 students including high schoolers. Also the university owns a large national and international presence, with satellite campuses and extension schools in other states of Mexico and US, China and Canada as well.

The Universidad de Los Andes Colombia, also called Uniandes now holds the fifth in the regions’ ranking. Similarly it holds the 272nd place in the world rankings after climbing three places. The university founded in 1948 in Bogota. Correspondingly it provides a whole lot of facilities for students to enjoy. Those include 50,000 square meters of green space and woodland, 163 laboratories and a sports centre with a semi-Olympics swimming pool as well.

It has climbed up in world university ranks during past years. Besides the university founded in 1943. At this point owns 31 campuses across 25 cities of Mexico. Furthermore ITESM  has a total of 91,200 students. Also it has the strongest score in QS World University Rankings by Subject for art & design. Moreover which ranked 45th in the world. ITESM is placed within the global top 100 for the subject business & management.

Universidad de Chile university is the oldest university in Chile. It was first established in 1843. Ranked 7th according to Latin American Rankings plus 208th according to the world rankings 2019. Furthermore, the current student population is around 41,000. Universidad de Chile is one of the best universities in the region. Plus the university has scored perfectly in academic and employer reputation and web impact indicators. According to the latest rankings .Universidad de Chile got the positions amongst the best 30 subjects in the world. Furthermore it has achieved the eighth position for mineral & mining engineering.

UBA has got best scores in academic and employer reputation indicators. Being one of the largest universities in the world, the university currently has a population of 345,000 undergraduate students. And another important thing is that their undergraduate degrees are free for both domestic and international students.

Universidad Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) ranked 9th amongst the top universities in Latin America.  As well as 361st in the world. UFRJ also got a finer score for the web impact indicator implicating  the international engagement of the university with a sustainable online presence. The university was first established as the Royal Academy of Artillery, Fortification and Design in 1792. Now has a huge presence in Rio de Janeiro with several museums, hospitals and research facilities throughout the city.

Universidad Nacional de Colombia has achieved the 10th place in QS World University Rankings. Similarly the seventh place in the region for both academic and employer reputations and also 275th place in world university rankings. It is also known as The National University of Colombia in English. This is established in 1867 by an act of  the Congress of Colombia. And it has become the largest higher education institution in Colombia. Additionally, the university has a student population of more than 53,000 students. Similarly they offer the largest available selection of courses in the country. In addition to that, in the most recent QS World University Rankings, 23 subjects were featured by the university.
