When the apps menus appears, the screen responds fine. No need to touch more than once. But once the video start playing, problem arises. It takes several tries to pull down the top menu.

When the user want to open Wifi, Bluetooth and other, it take multiple taps to turn on and off. But things like NFC and other settings in the menu work fine on single tap. This is only when the phone is upright, screen in normal position. When flipped and screen is rotated the top menu works fine.

if Galaxy S8 touchscreen is not working properly

There are a number of possible reasons why the touchscreen is not as responsive as expected:

  • screen is damaged physically
  • a software bug that causes apps to malfunction
  • there’s a firmware (for the screen) issue
  • Poor tempered glass installation
  • Screen has hardware damage

If the top part of the touchscreen is physically damaged for some reason, it will work the same whether you’re playing a game or tapping on the wifi switch or button. Wonder why the top menu works normally when the screen is flipped? This may be the explanation.

We’re not very optimistic with your issue here and you’ll most likely end up with screen replacement or repair. Do this if your screen is cracked, or if you previously dropped the phone.
If it is confirm that S8 was never dropped nor it is physically damaged, then continue with the troubleshooting below.

Check for bad app issue

if Galaxy S8 touchscreen is not working properly

If your S8 does not have physical damage, the next troubleshooting step that you can do is to check for possible bad app problem. Some third party apps may interfere with Android. To check if one of the installed apps is causing the problem, restart the phone to “Safe mode”. In this mode, the device will run with only pre-installed apps at default settings and built in services running in the background. In other words all third parties will temporarily disable.

Diagnostic state is the other term used for safe mode where one can immediately know if the problem is with pre-installed apps, firmware or downloaded apps.

Following are the steps  to run Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge in Safe Mode:

  • Press and hold the Power button . As you see “Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE” appear on the screen, release the Power Key.
  • Hold immediately the Volume Down Key.
  • Continue holding the Volume Down Button until the device finishes rebooting.
  • Release it, when you see “Safe Maode” in the bottom left corner of the screen.

The purpose of Safe Mode is actually to find out that your device can boot up successfully. And if so, then boot it in Normal Mode. And if it does not make any difference, boot it in Safe Mode again, and at this stage find bad apps that are causing  error.

If the screen works normally on safe mode, you can bet a bad app is the culprit. To identify which of your apps is causing the trouble, you should boot the phone back to safe mode and follow these steps:
Boot to safe mode.
Check for the problem.
Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
If your S8 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Wipe the phone (via factory reset)

if Galaxy S8 touchscreen is not working properly

If problem is not resolve after “Safe mode”, the next troubleshooting step is to determine whether or not there’s a software bug causing the problem. For this purpose revert the software settings of your device to their defaults. To factory reset your S8:

  • Turn Off you phone.
  • Press and hold the Home and Volume Up Keys.
  • Press and hold the Power key without releasing the first two keys.

NOTE: No matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up Keys, it won’t affect your device. But when you press and hold the Power Key, that’s when the device start to respond.

  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge appears on the screen, release the Power button only.
  • When the Android logo appears, you may release both keys and leave the phone for about 30 to 60 seconds.

NOTE: The “Installing System Update” may appear on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android System Recovery Menu. It is the first phase of entire process.

  • Move through the options and highlight  “wipe data/ factory reset”.
  • Press Power button to select it.
  • Using the Volume Down button, highlight the option “yes-delete all user data”  .
  • Now press Power button to select it.
  • Wait until your device finish doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight “Reboot system Now”, and press the Power button. The device will now reboot longer than usual.

Factory reset is the best way to determine if bad software is to blame. If there’s an unknown software bug causing the problem, factory reset will most likely fix it.

Remove tempered glass from screen

If a tempered glass is installed in it and if factory reset is not effective, you can remove it. If not installed correctly, tempered glass may significantly lower the sensitivity of the touchscreen.

Let Samsung check the device

If all the solutions above won’t help, send the device to Samsung Service Center for repairing.
