At present, among the world thousands of people use an Android phone. I think that you are also one of them. Do you know that when you are rooting, flashing custom ROMs, and otherwise playing with the Android system, there are a lot of things that can go wrong? Most of the users heard about backups and restores. Even a custom recovery is a very powerful tool, but the problem is they don’t care about those to operate correctly, and also users haven’t enough knowledge about backup systems. TWRP is a great way of custom recovery, the Nandroid backup feature makes sure that all is never lost when happening anything that I mentioned before.

What is TWRP?

(TWRP )Team Win Recovery Project is a third party recovery, which allows you to make backups, install ROMs, root your phone, and do a heck of a lot more.

Note: Before you start, you should have clear knowledge about how to back up and restore your phone with TWRP recovery environment.

I think you have already read our previous articles which are how to unlock your bootloader  (The official way of How to unlock your bootloader) and install TWRP recovery(How to flash it on your phone). If you have not read yet, it’s better to read those first, because you will need to perform both of those tasks first.

TWRP is a Nandroid backup, which is near-complete images of your system. The advantage is, you can use your Nandroid backups to restore your phone to exactly the state it was when you backed up the following.

 -The version of Android,  Your wallpaper,  Your home screen right down to which text messages you had left unread.

Be careful about Nandroid backups will not work if you are trying to restore certain elements. Think you want to restore the apps from your old ROM on going to your new ROM, so you will need to use something like Titanium Backup. In the TWRP, it should be backup and restore the entire system in full.

How to Make Nandroid backup in TWRP

If you have got a problem, while you are rooting, flashing custom ROMs, and otherwise playing with the Android system, then the first thing which you need to do is make a Nandroid back up in TWRP.

♦ Note: In this way, if you feel that something goes wrong, you can restore your phone to its pre-broken state.

To do so, boot into TWRP recovery. When doing this, normally the different processes can happen on every phone. As an example, sometimes you may have to hold the Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously, and next use the volume keys to boot “Recovery Mode”.If you want you can see the Google instructions for your specific model, how it’s done.

If you have already done so far, then you will be greeted with the familiar TWRP home screen. Next click the Backup button.

Then you can obtain the following screen.

Here click on the “Name” bar displaying at the top of the screen, to give the backup a recognizable name. When I doing this, normally I use the current date and what I was doing when backed up.(2020 – 05 – 20 — pre root or 2020 – 05 – 20 — pre- CyanogenMod). After that check the Boot, System, and Data boxes, and then to back up swipe the bar which is displaying at the bottom of the screen.

Remember: The backup system is very large. Make sure that the relevant space is in your device. If not you will get an error message about there not being enough space. However, if you got that you may have to delete some things on your internal storage or SD card before continuing.

You should wait until the backup is finished. It may take some considerable time to complete. After it’s finished, you can go back to TWRP’s main menu by clicking the back button. Otherwise, tap “Reboot System” to reboot back to Android.

Sometime you will get a message from TWRP by asking “do you want to root your phone ?” such a way. if it happens choose “Do not Install”. I think it is better to flash the latest version of SuperSU yourself rather than having TWRP do it for you.

How to Restore from a Nandroid Backup in TWRP

If you need to restore from a previous backup, it’s easy. The process is,  just boot back into TWRP window. Now you can see the “Restore” button on the screen. Tap it.

Now you can see a list of your previous backups. Tap on anyone you need, then the following screen will be displayed.

Carefully see whether all the boxes are checked. Then swipe the bar to restore. The restore will take a few minutes. After completing the task, you can reboot your phone back into Android.

Again TWRP will ask you to root. As I mentioned before again tap “Do not Install”.

Now your phone is ok. When you return to Android, you should find that everything is exactly how you left it when you made that backup.

Nandroid backup has a simple easy process, but it’s very important If you plan on doing any system tweaking. Do a Nandroid backup before you do anything. If anything happens wrong, don’t be afraid. You can always restore without skipping a beat.
